What is EIGRP? What is EIGRP? Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) is a protocol used by Cisco running on Cisco routers. It is one of the two most popular routing protocols used today. EIGRP Features Enhanced IGRP (EIGRP) is a classless, extended distance-vector protocol that is superior to Cisco's other protocol, IGRP. Therefore, it is defined as extended IGRP. EIGRP uses an autonomous system concept to describe a group of consecutive routers that run the same routing protocol as IGRP and share routing information. Unlike IGRP, EIGRP sends subnet masks in routing updates. CiscoPods EIGRP is a hybrid routing protocol. EIGRP does not send link-state packets. Instead, it sends a distance-vector update with information about the cost of accessing them from the perspective of networks and broadcasting routers. EIGRP synchronizes routing tables between neighbors and then updates information that includes changes when there is a change in the topology. This feature makes it possible to use EIGRP on large networks. EIGRP can reach up to 255 hop counts. Some features that distinguish EIGRP from other protocols The protocol supports IPv4 and IPv6 with the help of independent modules. Classless (RIPv2 and OSPF) Supports VLSM / CIDR. Communication over Reliable Transport Protocol (RTP) Choosing the best route with the Diffusing Update Algorithm (DUAL) Protocol Independent Modules One of the most distinctive features of EIGRP is its support for routing to different network-layer protocols such as IP, IPX, Apple Talk and IPv6.
